While most people associate Tenerife with warm beaches and coastal resorts, driving up to Teide National Park feels like being on different planet. Just 45 minutes from the coast, you transition from subtropical palm trees to a Martian terrain of lava fields, towering rock formations, and pine forests above the cloud line.

Sunset & World-Class Stargazing (Starlight Reserve)

Teide National Park is recognized globally as an official Starlight Reserve. Thanks to its high altitude, minimal light pollution, and clean atmospheric conditions, it offers some of the best night-sky viewing on Earth.

While organized bus tours leave shortly after sunset, having your own rental car gives you an extra degree of freedom. Park at Llano de Ucanca or Mirador de Las Narices del Teide to watch the Milky Way emerge in total quiet. We strongly recommend bringing a DSLR camera and a tripod along if you have them - the resulting photos are otherworldly.

Tenerife is also an important destination for the astrophysics community thanks to the Observatorio del Teide (formerly Observatorio de Izaña) - a scientific complex boasting 5 solar telescopes and at least 12 different types of nocturnal telescopes, open to visit only with prior reservation. This same complex, along with the Roque de Los Muchachos, comprises the IAC’s European Northern Observatory.

Take the Mount Teide Cable Car (Teleférico)

The cable car starts from the base station (2,356 m) up to the plateau (3,555 m) in just 8 minutes. From the top, short paved trails lead to Mirador de La Fortaleza and Mirador de Pico Viejo, offering views to the neighboring islands of La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro.

Pro tip: book your cable car tickets weeks in advance online. If you wish to hike the final 163 meters to the crater summit (Pico del Teide), you must secure a free national park permit months ahead of your trip.

Hike routes and other personal recommendations from EcoCar staff

You don't need to climb the summit to enjoy all the hiking paths the National Park has to offer. These are our personal recommendations:

• Roques de García (Loop Trail - 3.5 km): An iconic, relatively easy loop walking around massive rock towers like Cinchado (the iconic rock pictured on old 1,000-peseta notes).
• Montaña Blanca (Challenge): A demanding high-altitude hike leading up toward the Altavista refuge and the summit.
• Zapato de la Reina: Unique erosion-sculpted lava rock.
• Minas de San José: A pale, gravelly landscape that looks like the surface of the Moon or Mars.
• Mirador de Chipeque: A significant stop point where you can perfectly see both sides of the Island - north and south.
• Mirador de La Tarta: A geologist special - a carved rock where you can see each layer of the uppermost crust of the National Park.
• Paisaje Lunar: An especially unique set of rock formations accessible only by hike from Vilaflor, reminiscent of actual lunar landscape.

How to Prepare: Weather & Extreme Altitude Conditions

A common mistake both tourists and residents make is inadequate preparation. The national park in its entirety is 2,000 metres above sea level, which implies extreme conditions depending on the time of year and weather. Temperatures on average are 10º lower than at sea level, relative humidity usually in the single digits, and no clouds to filter UV rays. These conditions are perfectly manageable during daytime and with basic provisions - a night visit is a different story, though, and we generally recommend stocking up for anything beyond 12 hours.

While organized group bus tours operate from major resorts, they follow strict, rushed itineraries. Renting a car gives you 100% freedom to stop at every viewpoint, hike at your own rhythm, and stay as long as you like for night stargazing.
